Alec Chisholm’s Story
Alec was 14-years-old and was living in Southampton on VE Day.
He remembers the day fondly because it was the day his older brother returned home after serving as a soldier in the war.
Alec talks about a street party taking place and describes with great detail the moment his brother appeared home after serving in Burma.
He says his experience of the war as a boy had been one of excitement and adventure. He was living away from home for four-and-a-half years after being evacuated from Southampton.
However, he talks about the feeling of anticipation on VE Day with the knowledge the war in Europe was over.
He goes on to reflect on life after VE Day and talks about the length of time for normality to return – rationing, for example, went on for some time and even got worse for a while.
