Roy Hall鈥檚 Story
Roy Hall, 88, is from Saltdean, near Brighton. He was in the army attached to the Horse Guard, and later served in the navy.
During World War Two, Roy also worked as a volunteer fire warden in Redhill, Surrey.
He remembers on VE Day he was under punishment in Chatham barracks in Kent. He was punished for returning back from leave late.
He was told by his commanding officer he would be kept inside for a fortnight with no money and no leave. Then mid-way through his punishment, VE Day was announced and everybody was allowed to go on leave.
Roy was elated. He went into Gillingham in Kent and then caught the train up to London where he remembers the station was awash with people celebrating.
