Edward Sharp, 91, is from New Duston in Northampton.

Ted had just left school when World War Two started in 1939 and was working in Northampton for an architect firm.

Northampton spirits were buoyant during the war, with the town being fairly lucky in the lack of bombing it received throughout.

On VE Day, Ted was serving in the RAF as an airframes fitter at Maison Blanche base near Algiers in North Africa. His role was to maintain and service the aircraft at the base each day.

Living on a tented site near the hangers, not having facilities in the tents meant that nearby they had ablution blocks, with PA systems attached.

Edward was the first up and heard over the PA that the war was over - the announcement said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 VE Day, the war is over. Have the day off and come back to work tomorrow.鈥�

Rushing back to the tent to tell his peers the news, they instantly thought it was a wind up and told him where to go. A friend came back soon after and reaffirmed the news. They used their day off to celebrate in the base bar.
