Holy Communion
Nathan (11) Kiera and Santos (both 8) remember Jesus with bread and wine.
Holy Communion is introduced by Nathan as a re-enactment of the last supper where Jesus words at the Last Supper and his sacrifice are remembered. Communion means, simply, 鈥榯ogetherness鈥 This is a ritual to show the togetherness of Christians and God.
The Last Supper was Jesus鈥 last meal before he died and he shared two signs with his followers: bread as a symbol for his body being broken, and wine as a symbol for his blood being spilled when he was crucified.
Nathan has been to classes to learn about the meaning of the bread and wine before he was considered ready to join in with Holy Communion in his Church of England.
Kiera and Santos, both 8, are Roman Catholic Christians. We see them getting ready for their first communion. Kiera says 鈥業t represents when Jesus gave his body out to his disciples 鈥 and it鈥檚 like we are the disciples鈥 (the word 鈥榙isciple鈥 means 鈥榝ollower鈥 鈥 any follower of Jesus is a kind of disciple).
Kiera has a new white dress for her first communion, and a party afterwards.
Blessing the bread, in Catholic belief, turns it into the body of Christ. This is called a 鈥榮acrament.鈥 She says: 鈥業 think it is very important to trust in God on my first Holy Communion day.鈥
Santos: 鈥淚t鈥檚 good for children my age to do something like this because we are learning more about God. It feels like a grown up thing, it鈥檚 exciting.鈥 When to the pupils get this same feeling of excitement at being a bit more grown up?
