Author Bill Bryson announced the shortlist for the Wellcome Book Prize which celebrates the best new books that feature some aspect of medicine, health or illness.

Bryson said wider society should have an understanding of science and the work being carried out in the field.

"There's a need to make the rest of us appreciate science, everybody out on the street should understand CERN and what's happening there and why it's important that those kind of fundamental issues are being dealt with," he said.

Barbara Sahakian, Professor Clinical Neuropsychology wrote the popular science book Bad Moves and said there is a need for scientists to communicate the ethical discussions behind their work.

"Scientists need to focus more on ethics and bring it to the public," she said.
