Why is #ChapelHillShooting trending worldwide?
Have the world media been too slow in reporting the killing of three Muslim students in Chapel Hill ? Or, are they simply doing a responsible job of fact-checking?
The world's media are slowly picking up the story of a triple murder yesterday of three college students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The three, all Muslims, are said to have been shot in the head. In the meantime, a 46-year-old local man has been arrested and charged with their murder.
Social media is abuzz with the story - particularly with speculation that the motive behind the shooting was anti-religious or anti-Muslim. The hashtag #MuslimLivesMatter is getting widespread attention and there is also an ongoing conversation about why mainstream media have been slow to report the murder.
Are the media quicker to report stories of violence when the perpetrators are Muslim - and slower when Muslims are victims? Have the big media organisations been slow to pick up the story, or are they simply doing a responsible job of fact-checking and not leaping to conclusions?
