Brinsworth, Rotherham: Twist of Fate
A twist of fate separated forever two miners from Rotherham who enlisted together at the start of World War One.
Joseph Stanley and Cyril Marr were working together at Rotherham Main Colliery when war was declared.
They lived together on Atlas Street at Brinsworth and volunteered to swap their dangerous life underground for an overseas adventure. But Joseph was soon discharged and never left Atlas Street.
When Joseph's pal Cyril was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme he named his son after his dead friend.
