Italy is no stranger to economic and political turmoil, but its position on the southern end of Europe means it draws in migrants fleeing places that are much worse off in Africa and the Middle East. This year the steady flow has become a huge torrent as thousands risk a dangerous trip across the Mediterranean. Emma Jane Kirby has been watching the arrivals.
