Japanese Prisoner Breakout

On 5 Aug 1944, hundreds of Japanese prisoners of war in Australia attempted the largest breakout of World War Two. It became known as the Cowra Breakout.

In the early hours of 5 August 1944, hundreds of Japanese prisoners of war being held near the Australian town of Cowra staged the largest breakout of World War Two. Hear oral history accounts of that night from the archives of the Australian War Memorial's Australia鈥揓apan Research Project.
