Mauritius: Umar Timol
ISLAND
By UMAR TIMOL
island, place of all confluences
island, which the blood of slaves nourishes
island, which the sweat of coolies fecundates
island, which is of all elsewheres, all drifts
island of freedom, witness of the possible, and of tomorrows
island-memory in her archives so many wounds, so many sufferings
island-prison the seas enshackling dreams
island of freedom
witness of the possible and of tomorrows
island-colours which reunites all osmeses, metis island
island of love where another humanity builds itself
tree-being roots anchored in the clay of minglings
tree-being open to all winds, all becomings
tree-being, new being
island of love, in the eyes of the child
my child, the furrows of light
the light of my island
light bedecked with the breath of celestial beauty
only island, island of love, island, my island
