Emlyn Williams reads an excerpt from The Fight
Welsh actor and dramatist Emlyn Williams, later famous for his one man Dylan Thomas tribute show, which he called ‘A Boy Growing Up’ reads an excerpt from the story ‘The Fight’. The story was first published in the Thomas collection ‘Portrait of an Artist as a Young Dog’ in 1940. Thomas loosely based this prose piece on the story of the development of his teenage friendship with Welsh composer Daniel Jones; Jones later confirmed that the start of their lifelong friendship had been a school-yard fight in Swansea when Dylan was aged 12. The excerpt read here portrays Dylan’s version of the build up to the fight. The archive reading dates from 1959.
