Perth, Scotland: John D Fergusson, Unlikely War Artist
PH2 8NS - The Fergusson Gallery, Perth.
John Duncan Fergusson, one of the major artists of the Scottish Colourists school of painting, was in his mid forties when the upper age for conscription was raised to 51 in 1918.
He appealed to several high placed friends in order to secure a safe berth. Thanks to the intervention of Alfred Yockney, Sec of the British War Memorials Committee at the MOI, Fergusson got his wish. Thanks to Yockney鈥檚 intervention, Fergusson spent several months in the summer of 1918 painting scenes at Portsmouth docks. A world of way from the horrors of war.
