Colin Evans gardening advice

If you want a tree with lots of interest throughout the year which will not over take your garden then look out for one of the slower growing Beech Trees. The best in my view is Fagus Sylvaticaa "Tricolour" which although loses its leaves in autumn will fill the garden in the summer months with the most beautiful colourful foliage. The upright growth of this tree combined with the three colours on the foliage of green, pink and white make this a good tree for a medium sized garden.

Sow seed Potatoes now in the open ground or if you've no room then into large pots. Place compost in pots or dig over a piece of ground and firm the soil. Sow the seed Potatoes well down and when the green leaves merge in a matter of weeks simply mound up the soil around them. I like the old and tested varieties like Arron Pilot, Casablanca, Epicure and Pentland Javelin.

Sow Peas and Beans in shallow drills directy into the open ground and water well in making sure each the seed is firmed well in and water from time to time untill the seedlings emerge. Once the seeds reach the six leaf stage then push canes or pea sticks next to them so that they climb and find their way early in the growing stage. Feed with a solution of feed high in nitrogen for green fleshy growth.
