- Spillers, one of Britain's biggest bakers, is to stop making bread because of record losses.
- Roddy Llewellyn's marriage to Princess Margaret was on the rocks.
- Parcel bombs were sent to addresses in Covent Garden & Stockwell in London.
- The proceedings in the house of commons were broadcast regularly for the first time on radio.
- There was a twenty four hour unofficial strike by BA cabin crew.
- Elaine Paige was chosen to star in the stage show Evita.
- The RAF were celebrating their 60th anniversary.
- Red Rum didn't race in the National due to an injury on his leg.
- In California 50 skydivers failed to break the world record for skydiving by linking up in mid-air in human star.
- Martin Luther King's widow led 2000 mourners on a march of remembrance to mark 10th anniversary of her husband's assassination.

- Canberra was on her way to the Falklands.
- Requisitioned ferry 'Europic' was being refitted in Southampton whilst the 'Norland' was in Portsmouth being turned into a troop ship.
- Snooker star Steve Davis appeared in a tournament in Southampton.Â
- HMS London was sold to Pakistan.
- Duchess of Kent was in Fareham.
- A number of young trees were destroyed by fire in Lyndhurst.
- Two pupils from Mountbatten School, Romsey reached the National final of a super-skills competition.
- There was an armed siege in the Harefield area of Southampton.
- The National Trust announced it was to take over the running of Kingston Lacy House.
- Delorean Cars was given enough work to last for a month.Â
- A bomb exploded in central Paris.

- The Commons National Heritage Select Committee began an investigation into the price of CDs, which cost up to fifty per cent more in the UK than in the United States.
