Newly Retired Judge Says Sentencing Guidelines Are Wrong

A senior Crown Court judge who has stood down after 30 years is critical of sentencing guidelines. Richrad Bray has been talking exclusively to 91Èȱ¬ Radio Northampton.

Prisoners aren't serving enough of their sentences and too many offenders are being punished with out of court orders. That's according to a senior Crown Court judge who has stood down after 30 years.

Richard Bray says that too often judges are under pressure from the government to use non-custodial sentences. He says it's all because it's cheaper than sending offenders to prison.

Mr Bray has just retired and has granted 91Èȱ¬ Radio Northampton reporter Elinor Cross a rare interview, giving an insight into what he sees as the problem areas within the criminal justice system.

Elinor Cross presents the judge’s comments and Stuart talks to Janet Crowe, the Deputy Director of the Prison Reform Trust.
