Premier League set to be "lowest scoring" since 2008-9

Guardian football writer Jonathan Wilson on the drop-off in Premier League goals this season.

The Guardian's football writer Jonathan Wilson, author of Inverting The Pyramid: The History Of Football Tactics, says despite last weekend's glut of Premier League goals, the total for the season so far is the lowest for five seasons.

“It's a slightly odd season in that it feels like there's been hundreds of goals scored," says Wilson. "You think of the way Liverpool have been playing, the way City have been playing, the way Fulham have been leaking goals all over the place. But actually if things go on as they are, this will be the lowest scoring season in the Premier League since 2008-09."

"I guess because the headlines, the things we're seeing are Suarez and Sturridge scoring all these goals, City scoring all these goals but actually taking the league as a whole there's been a slight drop off in terms of goals per game," he added.

Results from last weekend's high-scoring round of fixtures included Chelsea 6 - 0 Arsenal, Cardiff 3 - 6 Liverpool, Manchester City 5 - 0 Fulham, Spurs 3 - 2 Southampton and Everton 3 - 2 Swansea City.
