With the introduction of conscription during the First World War many farm workers were called up to serve in the armed forces. To make up for this shortage of labour, women were recruited to help out on farms such as Green Farm in Ely, Cardiff.

Today the farmhouse serves as a hostel for homeless people. Surrounded by buildings, it is easily missed in its suburban setting. But back in World War One the farm boasted open fields and a dairy herd, supplying milk to a local hospital. It was one of many farms in Wales needing the help of land girls, such as Agnes Greatorex.

Many women like Agnes responded to recruitment adverts placed in the local press. The work offered roughly a pound a week, a uniform and a life outdoors. It was hard work, but for women like Agnes it meant freedom from the drudgery of domestic service.
