Protests Against Traffic Returning To Town Centre Street

A protest meeting will be told by Labour & Lib Dem Councillors that Northampton's Abington Street should stay pedestrianised. The controlling Conservatives say traffic will return

A protest meeting will be told by Labour and Liberal Democrat Councillors that Abington Street in Northampton should stay pedestrianized, and that a scheme to make part of it open to one-way traffic is a folly.

The Conservative group that controls Northampton Borough Council says a decision on the plan to reintroduce traffic to Abington Street has been taken and that work on the £3-milion project will start in April.

Northampton shoppers give their views and reporter Willy Gilder reviews the street’s history and present circumstances.

Stuart talks to Labour Councillor Danielle Stone, to Malcolm Allen, Chair of the Traders Alliance in Chorley where traffic has been reintroduced to the town centre, to the Conservative Leader of Northampton Borough Council, Councillor David Macintosh, and to John Sheinman, who owns Sheinman Opticians on Abington Street.
