Rugby, Warwickshire: A Schoolboy Escape

Schoolboy Frank Narraway wrote about his experiences in Germany between August and October 1914.

The author, then a 12-year-old boy, left England to join his parents in Freiburg, Germany, on 1 August 1914. But when Britain entered the war, the Narraways were forced to move to Baden-Baden, though, as Frank's mother was German, they were later given permission to stay with one of her sisters at Heidelberg.

Frank and his elder sister returned to England via Switzerland and France, accompanied by a courier from Thomas Cook, who had been sent from England by one of Frank's uncles.

Later in the war, Frank attended Rugby School.
