Colin Evans gardening tips

FeedÌýspring bulbs with Sulphate Of Potash as they are nowÌýpushing their way above the soil surface even though the cold chill of winter is very much with us, still, bulbs are pretty hardy little bundles of energy desperate to get to the surface and get some sunlight into their developing leaves so don't worry if we get snow.Ìý

Plant Fig "Brown Turkey" asÌýnot only is it very hardy but has the best fruit and plenty of it. If planted in a pot on a south westerly facing wall you should get years of lovely fruit. Figs are so easy to look after, as once planted, all is required is feeding during the fruiting season and making sure the compost does not dry out in hot conditions. "Brown Turkey" is the most reliable cropper with fruit ripening in August and produces the sweetest figs full of flavour and goodness. The tree itself is best fan trained against the wall.

Plant new evergreen hedges in well dug and manured soil making sure each plant is well firmed in to prevent them being rocked about by strong winds. If you plant heding Conifers ensure they are trimmed into shape as they grow, avoiding fast growth which can over power and shade borders and lawns.
