A special essay from Nick Thorpe, in Cordoba, considering the survival strategies of some Roma families he met there. Originally living in Romania and now in Spain, they are some of the European Union's most borderless people, who have already been migrating for work and maintaining family links across the continent for hundreds of years. Yet today many are living on the margins of Spanish society, and even the 'gitano' (Spanish-speaking Roma) community sees their way of life as archaic.
