Community Speedwatch Catch 4,000 Speeding Drivers In 2013

Over 4,000 drivers were caught speeding in rural Northants in 2013 by members of community speedwatch schemes, but culprits are typically only sent a warning letter.

More than 4 thousand drivers were caught speeding in Northamptonshire in 2013 not by the police, but by members of Community Speedwatch schemes.

Those caught speeding in 30 mph limits included three doing over 60 mph and one driving at over 70 mph but, while repeat offenders can be visited by the police, typically only a warning letter is sent when caught the first time by Speedwatch.

Reporter Anna Bartlett explains how Community Speedwatch works, reporter Martin Heath meets people in the village of Brixworth, and Stuart talks to Sergeant Jon Hodgson from the Northamptonshire Police Safer Roads Team, to Elaine O'Leary who co-ordinates Community Speedwatch for the Northamptonshire branch of ACRE (Action for Communities in Rural England), and to Richard Manning, a volunteer with the Community Speedwatch scheme in Maidwell.
