The Comoros and Greenland

Emilie Filou learns why some Comorians will risk everything to reach Mayotte, and asks what could make them stay home; Rob Crossan witnesses an night of binge drinking in Tassiliq

Two stories of young people dreaming of escape from their limited prospects - whether in the frozen Arctic or what might look like paradise in the Indian Ocean. On the island of Anjouan in the Comoros, Emilie Filou learns why some young local people will risk everything to reach the nearby French overseas territory of Mayotte. It can be a lethal gamble - and it costs a fortune to go. So what could be done to help persuade them to stay at home? One project might have found an answer on - and indeed IN - Comorian soil. In the very different environment of eastern Greenland, still administered by Denmark, Rob Crossan sees how harsh and limited local life can be - and witnesses a night of epic (if surprisingly quiet and well-behaved) binge drinking in Tassiliq.
