'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' - from the novel to the stage
The playwright Simon Stephens, director Marianne Elliott and the cast members discuss how the novel 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' was adapted from the novel by Mark Haddon to a stage play at the National Theatre. Interviews with the cast and creative team are interspersed with footage of the 2012 National Theatre production. Simon Stephens discusses the structure of the novel. He talks about how Mark Hadden plays with chronology in the novel and why. We hear how Mark Haddon uses a lot of direct speech in his novel, and how Simon Stephens wrote his play using this dialogue as a starting point. We see examples of this direct speech lifted from the novel into the stage play. Simon Stephens discusses the use of the character Siobhan as a narrator in the play, and we see footage of the relationship between Siobhan and Christopher.
NOTE: There is footage from the theatre production of a model dog with a pitchfork through it, which some people might find upsetting.
