Colin Evans gardening tips

Order bare root hedging plants from nurseries through the post or better still, pay a visit to your local garden centre as they too will have them to sell. Once you get them home plunge bare rooted plants into a bucket of cold water and then plant them twenty four hours later. Water in and then just forget about the new plants銆赌until next spring when they will need a good feed.

Prune Blackcurrants by removing the oldest wood as the best fruits are borne on wood two to three years old. Reduce the whole shrub by two thirds. It seems a bit harsh, however, you will be rewarded next summer.

Winter Spinach can be sown under plastic cloches in shallow drills of 1cm and firmed in. Sow in well drained soil and soon you will see the first shoots appearing where, there銆赌after, rapid growth will take place. All being well you could have a crop to harvest in six weeks.

Happy Gardening.
