Colin Evans gardening tips

The ground is just right for planting at present and at this time of the year I like to plant Conifers to add colour and shape especially on dull winter days.

Go for Abies Balsamea Hudsoniana which grows very close to the ground and Cryptomeria Japonica Vilmoriniana with tight packed foliage which turns from green to a rich purple in winter. If you want a conical type then plant Juniperus communis Compressa.

Take cuttings of your favourite summer flowering shrubs and push them into the ground in a moist light spot in the garden. Better still, if you have a cool greenhouse then place your cuttings in pots there.

Continue to aerate lawns to allow moisture to escape during dry days.
