Moment of reflection with Sister Gemma Simmonds
Pope Francis spoke recently of the importance of following our conscience. We human beings are often a mystery to ourselves. There can be deep wells of faith, hope and love within us, often not articulated in any formal sense, but genuine nonetheless. Many people believe in the worth of living a good life, of striving for the common good, even when that means sacrificing some advantage of their own. They believe in the importance of truth, honesty and integrity in both personal and public life, even when they can't always live up to these ideals. They believe in the importance of love, faithfulness and commitment in relationships, in a just social order in the simple virtues of kindness and courtesy.
No one group in the world has a monopoly on these virtues or on the striving to be good. That is why, during the Mass, Catholics commend to God "Those whose faith is known to you alone." Ultimately, Christians believe that only God can judge what lies deepest in the human soul. Whether people are believers or not, in the formal sense, that capacity for goodness, that call to live a full and virtuous life are the best reflection of what it is to be human.
