On 6 September 2010, former Middlesbrough footballer Gary Parkinson suffered a stroke.
It was only later the devastating effects of that moment would become apparent. Gary was diagnosed with locked-in syndrome; it means he is aware and awake but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles.
