This year Channel 4 becomes the first mainstream British TV channel to broadcast the call to prayer every morning throughout the religious month. The TV station will also show a series of programmes as part of an examination of Ramadan.

Ralph Lee, Channel 4's head of factual programming said it was an act of "deliberate provocation" aimed at viewers who might associate Islam with extremism.

However, there has been some criticism, including that it maybe a publicity-seeking stunt.
