Public Donations To Replace NHS Cash For Hospices

Fundraisers at two hospices in Northamptonshire say stepping up the amount of fundraising they do is a tall order - but they're up for it. And they're urging local people to dig deep - and donate.

Fundraisers at two hospices in Northamptonshire say stepping up the amount of fundraising they do is a tall order, but they're up for it. And they're urging people in the county to dig deep and to donate.

Yesterday, doctors who now commission health services in the county reassured staff, patients and families at Cransley Hospice near Kettering and Cynthia Spencer in Northampton, that the centres are not at risk of closure.

But they say that the NHS provides the majority of funding to the Northamptonshire hospices, whereas across the rest of the country hospices cost the NHS far less.

Reporter Willy Gilder provides the background to the story, and Willy talks to Pam Nock, Chair of the Friends of Cynthia Spencer. Stuart talks to Sue Bownass, the Fundraiser for the Friends of Cynthia Spencer, to Wendy Brown from Thrapston who was one of the Thrapston Calendar Girls who supported Cransley Hospice at Christmas, and to Mary Butcher, a Labour Councillor who sits on Northamptonshire County Council's Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee.
