The invention of the first power station
Mark Miodownik explores the scientific achievements of Charles Parsons. Michael Faraday鈥檚 electrical dynamo was a pioneering breakthrough, but it was limited by the engines that powered it. Early steam engines vibrated violently and broke down on an almost daily basis. Charles Parsons developed Faraday鈥檚 dynamo into a one-step rotary engine. His design used high pressure steam to power a turbine, and could generate electricity far more efficiently.
