How can lettuce make footprints?
WEB EXCLUSIVE: Paignton Zoo's Kevin Frediani discusses reducing the carbon footprint of lettuce using a vertical farming system. It's a good application of this experimental technology, growing very specific crops for a special purpose.
For closely controlled production of specialist crops like these, as well as for pharmaceutical crops and other research purposes, the technology offers exciting opportunities.
However, the amount of electrical energy needed to provide sufficient lighting means indoor farming is unlikely ever to be used for the production of staple crops like grains or root crops, which is what you鈥檇 need to meet the entire food demand of a whole population.
