This large legionary fortress was the northern advance headquarters for the force led into Scotland by the famous general Agrippa in the early 80s AD. Had the fort continued in use it might, like Inveresk, have eventually turned into the core of a larger settlement on the banks of the Tay. However, before it could be finished Roman military priorities changed and the fort was dismantled and abandoned, its iron nails carefully buried to stop them falling into hostile hands.
