Gays Forces Ban Upheld
First broadcast: 7 June 1995
A ban on homosexuals serving in the armed forces has been upheld by the High Court. However, Lord Justice Simon Brown has expressed concerns that the ban is wrong and based on prejudice.
The three applicants who challenged the government on this issue are all former members of the armed services who have been dismissed because of their sexuality. They feel encouraged by the recommendation of Lord Justice Simon Brown that there needs to be a review of the Ministry of Defence's policy. Interviewed after this report, former military intelligence chief Sir Michael Armitage supports the government's position.
