The Alchemist Discovers Phosphorus
Dr Peter Wothers recreates a medieval experiment in which the alchemist Brand took litres of his own urine and extracted the magical light-giving element, phosphorus.
The intense glow when the phosphorus reacts with the air is bright enough to light the lecture theatre, and more powerful than any light source known at the time.
