Charity and dignity

Following Hurricane Mitch the future looked bleak for the majority of Hondurans. However, in the aftermath, Opportunity International and the Institute for Honduran Development (IDH) helped provide relief to some of the country鈥檚 poorest citizens. They provided loans to people who would otherwise have been considered too poor for banks to give them credit. They could then use the money to help run small business and escape the poverty trap. The system is known as micro-enterprise. Rather than just receiving hand-outs and charity, it allowed the people of Honduras to maintain their independence and dignity whilst rebuilding their lives.
