Commitment to God
Dr Robert Beckford explains the meaning of Jesus' words in Luke 14:26 - 'Whoever does not hate father and mother, wife and children, and even life itself cannot be my disciple.' He explains Jesus used various techniques, such as exaggeration, to make people think about what he was saying. Jesus wanted people to put their commitment to God before everything else, because commitment isn't just about words, it is about actions.
