The Colosseum (pt 2/2)
A discussion of gladiators, whose bouts in the arena were the most popular form of entertainment in the Roman arena. The unpredictability of the fighting was a part of its appeal. Gladiators aroused passionate feelings but there was ambivalence in people鈥檚 feelings towards them: on the one hand, they were the lowest of the low; on the other, they were hugely popular heroes. Bizarre developments of this type of entertainment, invented to satisfy the desire for novelty, are also discussed.
