Different Types of Welsh Hat
Exploration of various types of the Welsh hat, traditionally worn by Welsh women. Includes reviews of the hat by Victorian writers including Tennyson and Nigel Hawthorn. Eddie Butler discusses its background, looking at the role of Henry Paget, a Welsh soldier who fought at the battle of Trafalgar and lost his leg there. He had an artificial leg built, the first of its type. At the 1821 Caernarfon Eisteddfod, Paget in his role as President for the Day, made a speech recommending wider use of the hat. It was then worn by Princess Victoria (soon to be Queen) at Bangor who praised its Welshness.
