With concern for the Welsh language mounting in the 60s, Welsh language campaigners go on hunger strike. Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society) held its first official protest on 2 February 1963 in Aberystwyth. Some 40 members and supporters sat in the middle of the road on Trefechan bridge, stopping the traffic for half an hour. The Welsh Language Act was passed, giving some legal protection for the use of Welsh in official government business. Prior to the Act, only the English language could be spoken at government and court proceedings.
