The World and the Greeks and Romans
British historian Arnold J Toynbee discusses the significance of the historic Greco-Roman expansion in his final Reith lecture.
This year's Reith Lecturer is British historian Arnold J Toynbee. The former Director of Studies at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, he is currently the Koraes Professor of History at London University. He considers how Europe interacts with other countries in his Reith Lecture series entitled 'The World and the West'.
In his final lecture entitled 'The World and the Greeks and Romans', Professor Toynbee analyses the Greek and Roman global expansion in order to evaluate the true impact of Western expansion. Using historical examples, Professor Toynbee argues that today's extension of Western culture is not a new phenomenon.
