Robert Gardiner analyses the social attitudes which contribute to racial antagonism in his first Reith lecture entitled 'Racism'.

This year's Reith Lecturer is the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Robert Gardiner. Born in Ghana, he has worked as the Head of Ghana Civil Service, is a former Deputy Executive Secretary for the Economic Commission for Africa and worked as the Officer-in-Charge for the UN Operation in the Congo. He is also the author of 'Development of Social Administration' and presents his Reith series entitled 'A World of Peoples'.

In this lecture entitled 'Racism', Robert Gardiner analyses the attitudes which contribute to racism and explores the reasons for racial discrimination. If repulsion is not instinctive and strangeness is not the cause of antagonism, then why and how does racial resentment arise? To answer this question he reviews the characteristics of racism.
