The Dark Continent of Technology

Dr Daniel J Boorstin examines how modern advances in aeronautics and electronics have extended the reach of man's leap all over the earth.

The distinguished Professor of American history and the twelfth Librarian of Congress Dr Daniel J Boorstin gives his fourth Reith lecture from his series entitled 'America and the World Experience'.

In this lecture entitled 'The Dark Continent of Technology', Professor Boostin explores America's success in technological development. He examines how modern advances in aeronautics and electronics have extended the reach of man's leap all over the earth and into space. Messages can be sent across the planet practically instantaneously. We can watch on television actions that are taking place miles away and we can drive thousands of miles over land relatively quickly.

However with all of these new developments, Dr Boorstin warns, we may become more isolated and lose our ability to communicate with the people directly next to us. He analyses how having more knowledge from different areas of the globe could affect people's relationship to their surroundings and their understanding of the world.
