City Bids Launched
Gateshead has put forward its case to be Britain's newest city. Middlesbrough is among the other towns competing for the title.The Queen will award city status to one town as part of her diamond jubilee celebrations in 2012. Gateshead council leader Mick Henry said it would have real benefits.
