Britain has one of the highest rates of stillbirths in the developed world, according to a global study published in the Lancet.

More than four thousand babies are still born in Britain each year; that's ten times the number of cot-deaths.

The figure varies around the UK, with stillbirths a third more likely in the East Midlands than in the South West.
