Jungle storm
The fertility of the jungle depends not just on sunshine but on rainfall, and rain is at its most abundant in the tropics. Big storms are preceded by violent gales. The rain then falls in drenching torrents, flooding parts of the forest and forming streams down to the rivers. The jaguar is an excellent swimmer and is seldom found far from water where it hunts crocodiles, frogs and even fish. White tent-making bats stay dry by chewing through heliconia leaves, so that the parts either side of the mid-rib can be bent to form a canopy.
