The M25 overspend

The multi-billion-pounds upgrade of the M25 in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire - from three lanes to four - is being branded a waste of money.

A project to widen twenty two miles of the M25 through Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire could have wasted 拢1bn of public money, MPs have said.

The Public Accounts Committee says the Highways Agency took too long to appoint a contractor, ignored cheaper alternatives, and got the estimated costs wrong.

The committee's chairman, Labour MP Margaret Hodge, was furious at the overspend.

Simon and Lorna spoke to journalist Quentin Wilson, who said that these sorts of overspends were sadly all too common.

Mike Penning is the Roads Minister and the MP for Hemel Hempstead and joined Simon and Lorna on Breakfast.
