AIt's late May and under the water the annual mayfly emergence is about take place on an English river. Mayfly larvae are the foundation of the river's ecosystem. They've survived on the river bed for about a year, but now it's time for them to transform themselves. Late may is time for the flying forms to emerge from their larval skins and to live, love and die. They have only 24 hours to emerge, mate and lay their eggs before they die - if they survive: just about every creature loves a tasty mayfly.
