In summertime, badgers emerge from their sett just before sunset. Female badgers - or sows - collect bluebells for use as bedding material for the family's sleeping quarters. Her cubs were born in February and are now almost as big as their mother. As badgers pick up ticks and other parasites underground, much of their time above ground is spent grooming and scratching. By June the six cubs will have been weaned and will join their parents on foraging trips into the woodland, searching for worms, beetles and other delicacies. For now, there is time to strengthen family bonds before the seriousness of growing up.
