Living right above the heads of the people of London, is the fastest animal on the planet: the peregrine falcon. Man-made clifftops offer sanctuary to the peregrines, who nest in these city skyscrapers. The advent of spring, and a new set of mouths to feed, brings new demands on their hunting skills that will stretch them to their limit. If peregrine chicks are to grow old enough to fly the nest, the parents must catch two pigeons a day for the next month. The peregrine's secret weapon is speed. On the flat, a pigeon can outfly a peregrine but by using gravity, the peregrine regains the advantage. Using the updraft the peregrine climbs to a height of half a mile enabling the falcon to survey their whole territory. Peregrines have very keen eyesight - at the base of each retina, they have two concentrations of visual sensors, where humans only have one. This gives them incredible powers of triangulation so that they can lock on to their unsuspecting targets from two miles away.
